Reverse logistics or returns management is the handling of returned merchandise.
Customer returns create problems in the supply chain. It seems that our
contemporary corporate structure supply chains forgot that merchandise is
returned, damaged and overstocked. When an item is returned it can take as many
as 12 steps at the end of the chain (reverse supply chain) for every
forward step for an item to re enter the supply chain.
In stead of extending the supply chain to extend past the point of
sale the contemporary retail supply chain stops at the P.O.S.. From here if
their is a return the supply chain is forced to operate in reverse. Creating
problems throughout the entire enterprise. From accounting to operations and
marketing the non-extended retail supply chain is a failure of planning for the
obvious. The result of the retail Industry failure in supply chain management
creates the reverse logistics industry.
